Mission
Wroclaw Centre for Networking and Supercomputing is an organizational unit
of Wroclaw University of
Technology. WCSS was founded in 1995.
Its main tasks are
- operation and development of the Wroclaw Academic Computer Network (WASK)
- operation and development of high performance computing services
- operation and development of network information services for
all academic institutions in city of Wroclaw Activities
The
WASK network
At first WASK network based on the FDDI loop connecting local networks
of individual universities and research institutions, later the ATM backbone
was created, which gave the possibility of creating virtual networks and
transferring multimedia. In the 2003 year it was replaced by Gigabit Ethernet.
WASK network includes 120 km of fiberoptic routes and 23 nodes, connecting
over 15,000 computer stations. WASK is connected through the
PIONIER
to GÉANT2 European Network and
to other national and global networks,
and to the Research and Academic Computer Network
NASK. WASK is supervised and monitored by WCSS using: HP OpenView and
CiscoWorks software, MRTG (MultiRouter Traffic Grapher), RRDTool, NetFlow
and WS-WATCH.
High
performance computing services
High Performance Computing environment in the Wroclaw Centre for
Networking and Supercomputing combines multiple independent systems
connected via a high-speed network to solve complex scientific problems
in numerous disciplines. This includes computational chemistry, physics,
fluid dynamics, finite element modeling, mathematics, acoustics and many
others. WCSS provides access to several rare or expensive software
packages, tools and libraries.
